Space maintainers or “spacers” can either be removable or fixed. Removable spacers can look like retainers and are used to fill in spaces that need to remain open.

Fixed space maintainers are used to hold space for a permanent tooth to come in when the baby tooth is lost early.  They come in several options: band-and-loop, lingual arch, and distal shoe appliance.
